Some items in your wardrobe require special care, and using fabric softener can damage them. Which clothing should not be treated with such products and why it matters - read below, according to the website Real Simple.
Towels
Most people think adding fabric softener to the wash helps keep towels fluffy, but it can have the opposite effect.
Fabric softeners coat the fibers with a thin layer of chemicals, which can reduce absorbency. Over time, this makes them feel waxy or less fluffy.
This is especially true for terry towels - their loops stick together, and the fabric loses its structure.
It is better to use regular powder or liquid detergent. Periodically wash at a higher temperature, if the manufacturer allows, to remove accumulated residue.
Flame‑resistant clothing
Some clothing has a special coating that makes it flame‑resistant. This is a built‑in safety feature, but adding fabric softener negates its effectiveness.
Traditional fabric softeners coat fabrics, leaving a layer of waxy, hydrophobic, greasy material that lubricates and softens the materials.
When the chemical builds up on the laundry, it becomes flammable and can make clothing and fabrics more prone to catching fire.
Follow the care instructions on the label to keep the flame‑resistant coating intact.
Moisture‑wicking fabrics
Any fabrics designed to wick away moisture, including athletic wear, should not be washed with fabric softener.
Fabric softeners can clog the tiny pores in synthetic fabrics such as polyester or nylon that allow moisture to escape. This reduces the effectiveness of sportswear and can cause odors to build up.
Instead, wash such items in cold water with detergent; you can add a little vinegar to soften the clothes and reduce odors. Air-dry or tumble-dry on low heat to prevent damage.
Water‑repellent items
This typically applies to outdoor gear, rainwear, and technical fabrics. They have a special coating that prevents water from penetrating the fabric.
Using fabric softener when washing them will reduce their effectiveness and make them less weather-resistant.
Tumble dry on low heat if allowed by the care label, as heat can reactivate some water‑repellent coatings.
White clothing
Refrain from using fabric softener for all white items. Softeners can leave greasy residue on clothes, which, over time, can attract more stains and cause white laundry to become dull.
It is better to use laundry detergent formulated for white clothing.
