The beginning of a relationship is always a time of intense emotions and “butterflies in your stomach.” However, it is precisely during this period, when we are blinded by infatuation, that we most often ignore the first warning signs that can later turn into serious problems.

RBC-Ukraine shares a guide to the behavioral traits in a man during the early stages of a relationship that may indicate you are dealing with an unreliable or even toxic partner.

Things move too quickly

If he declares his eternal love on the second date, starts planning children together and calls you “the one,” this is not necessarily a sign of genuine romance.

Often, this can be a manipulative tactic known as “love bombing.” The goal is to create a strong attachment quickly, make you lower your guard, and establish control before you have had a chance to get to know him properly.

Ignoring your boundaries in small things

One of the clearest tests of respect is how a man reacts when you say “no.” Pay attention to small boundary violations:

• You asked him not to call during a work meeting, but he calls “just to hear your voice.”

• You told him you do not like a particular dish, but he orders it anyway, saying, “You just haven’t tried it the way they make it here.”

• He insists on meeting when you have clearly said that you are tired and want to stay home.

If someone ignores small personal boundaries now, they may be more likely to disregard bigger boundaries later.

The “all my exes were crazy” syndrome

Pay close attention to how a man talks about his past relationships. If all of his ex-partners were “hysterical,” “materialistic,” or “unstable,” while he portrays himself as completely innocent in every story, that can be a major red flag.

An emotionally mature person can acknowledge their own share of responsibility for a breakup.

His words and actions do not match

He may make grand promises, but if he regularly shows up late without a good reason, cancels plans at the last minute, or disappears for several days, pay attention to his actions.

A person’s reliability is measured not by flattering words, but by the consistency of their behavior.
