Liverpool forward and Portugal national team player Diogo Jota has died at 28 in a car accident, reports Marca.

What is known about Jota's death

The car crash involving Jota occurred at the 65th kilometer of the A-52 highway, near the Sanabria region, in the province of Zamora.

According to eyewitnesses who called the 112 emergency service, the Liverpool player's car lost control, went off the road, and caught fire.

At the time of the accident, Jota was in the car with his 26-year-old brother André, who is also a professional footballer and plays for the Portuguese club Penafiel, which competes in the Primeira Liga of Portugal.

Diogo just married his fiancée, Rute Cardoso, ten days ago. The couple had three children: Denis (born in 2021), Duarte (born in 2023), and a daughter born last year.

In his last Instagram post, the footballer shared a touching wedding video and wrote: "A day we will never forget."


Who was Diogo Jota

Diogo Jota was born on December 4, 1996, in the Portuguese city of Massarelos. He had been involved in football since childhood, going through the academy of the club Paços de Ferreira, where he made his professional debut in the 2014/15 season.

In 2016, he signed a contract with Atlético Madrid but never played an official match.

After a season on loan at Porto, he was noticed in England. In 2017, he moved to Wolverhampton, initially on loan, and signed a permanent contract later.

Jota helped Wolves win the Championship, move to the Premier League, and become one of the leaders of Nuno Espírito Santo's team, scoring 44 goals for the Wolves in all competitions over three seasons.

In September 2020, Jota transferred to Liverpool for about 45 million euros. He quickly integrated into Jürgen Klopp's squad, frequently appearing as a starting player or the first substitute off the bench.

He became a winner of the FA Cup and the English League Cup in the 2021/22 season and also helped the Merseyside team win the Premier League in the 2024/25 season.

In total, Diogo played more than 150 matches for Liverpool and scored over 50 goals.

For the Portugal national team, Jota played 49 matches and scored 14 goals. He participated in Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 and helped his national team win the UEFA Nations League in 2025.
