The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The award went to South African human rights activist Navi Pillay.

Navi Pillay was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize “for her efforts to promote peace and international law.”

Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay was born on September 23, 1941. She served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. She is of Indian (Tamil) descent and was born in South Africa.

In 1967, she became the first non-white woman to open her own law practice in the province of Natal. She defended anti-apartheid activists (apartheid was a system of racial discrimination and the forced separation of people based on skin color that was officially in effect in the Republic of South Africa (RSA) from 1948 until the early 1990s) and exposed the authorities’ use of torture and repression.

She was also the first non-white woman to serve on South Africa’s Supreme Court. She also worked as a judge at the International Criminal Court and served as president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

What makes the Nobel Peace Prize special?

Unlike other awards, the Nobel Peace Prize is presented for efforts to unite nations, advocate for peace initiatives, or reduce armed forces in the interests of global security. The laureates are also honored in Oslo, the capital of Norway, whereas Nobel laureates in other fields are honored in Stockholm, Sweden. According to Nobel’s will, the Peace Prize must be awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Its members must be elected exclusively by the Norwegian parliament.

The Nobel Peace Prize generates the most debate. Alfred Nobel believed that the Peace Prize should be awarded to the person who has done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations; for the abolition or reduction of standing armies; and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses. In the modern world, the concept of peace is quite controversial, so the question of what exactly we consider peace and who embodies it often arises.

2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate

Last year, the Nobel Committee announced María Corina Machado as the Nobel Peace Prize laureate “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

María Corina Machado is a Venezuelan opposition politician, founder and former head of the nonprofit organization Súmate, which promotes fair elections and monitors them.

María has run for office in Venezuelan elections more than once. She was a leading figure during the Venezuelan protests in 2014. In 2023, despite evidence confirming her victory in the elections, the Venezuelan regime at the time declared its own victory and tightened its grip on power. For her efforts to promote democracy in Venezuela, the Nobel Committee awarded María the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.

Who were the contenders for the 2026 Nobel Prize?

Although the names of nominees and the individuals who nominate them are kept secret for 50 years, names of potential candidates for the Peace Prize still emerge. According to AP News, possible contenders this year may include Ukrainian human rights activist and public figure Dmytro Kuleba and his Save the Children foundation, the International Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Court.

They also report that Trump has not hidden his desire to receive the Peace Prize and was nominated again, despite an unsuccessful attempt last year. This year, bookmakers and Nobel experts were skeptical about the US president’s actual chances.
