British doctors warn that drinking these two beverages during extreme heat can critically dehydrate the body and destroy sleep quality at night, according to the Daily Express.
Hidden danger of favorite drinks
During extreme temperatures, staying cool at night and getting the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep becomes a real challenge. Experts from the British Red Cross emphasize that the worst thing you can do for your body during a heatwave is to drink a glass of alcohol or a serving of iced coffee in the evening.
Caffeinated drinks act as powerful diuretics, forcing the kidneys to expel fluid more quickly, raising the body’s internal temperature, and triggering dangerous dehydration. Alcohol, which is often associated with summer relaxation, instead strongly interferes with the nervous system, making sleep shallow and restless.
Why daytime sleep is not recommended
Heat forces the body to spend a huge amount of energy just to maintain a stable temperature, which is why people often feel unbearably sluggish during the day. However, doctors strictly warn against giving in to the urge to nap.
Daytime sleep will disrupt your biological rhythms, and when it is time for proper night rest, you may simply be unable to fall asleep. Instead, experts recommend sticking to your normal routine as much as possible — going to bed and eating at the same time as usual — so as not to create additional stress for the body.
Medical professionals from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) have issued an important warning that extreme heat poses a deadly threat not only to elderly people or patients with chronic illnesses.
Even completely healthy people in their prime can suffer serious, life-threatening complications (up to heatstroke) if they ignore basic safety rules during periods of red weather alert.
