Anti-inflammatory foods help reduce the risk of chronic diseases and can even extend lifespan. A nutritionist shared the benefits of spinach and pomegranate and explained why they should be included in the diet, according to Real Simple.

The best anti-inflammatory products

Spinach

Nutritionist Christa Brown explained that this superfood is packed with vitamins, fiber, and nutrients.

Additionally, just one cup of leafy greens per day lowers biomarkers associated with colorectal cancer.

Spinach can be served hot or cold, but Brown recommends raw spinach for its health benefits. Fresh, frozen, or canned spinach provides the highest level of lutein, an antioxidant that reduces inflammation linked to cognitive decline, cardiovascular health, and cancer.

The presence of vitamin A in the greens helps slow the production of skin sebum in hair follicles, supporting the health of skin and hair. Excessive oil production can lead to acne, and controlling it helps address dermatological issues. Vitamin A is also essential for the growth of all body tissues, including skin and hair.

Pomegranate

Pomegranate seeds are a small but powerful way to support inflammatory health in the body. Ellagitannin in pomegranate seeds are bioactive polyphenols that have an anti-inflammatory effect on cells in the body.

Pomegranate seeds are also rich in fiber - about 4 grams per half cup - which is beneficial for digestive health. Additionally, they contain antioxidants and polyphenols that may support heart health, improve circulation, and even promote skin health.

To reap the benefits, the nutritionist recommends consuming about half a cup of pomegranate seeds a day.

It's best to opt for the seeds rather than the juice. Half a cup of seeds contains 7 grams of fiber, compared to only 0.2 grams of pomegranate juice. The seeds also contain more vitamin C - a powerful vitamin and antioxidant.

Consult with a doctor before adding pomegranate to your diet, especially if you are taking any medications. Pomegranate may reduce the absorption of certain statins and blood pressure-lowering drugs.
