One-third of Ukrainians suffer from high blood pressure, which quietly damages blood vessels and increases the risk of heart attack or stroke.
Ukrainian professor and dietitian Oleh Shvets explains 10 ways to lower blood pressure without medication.
Constant body weight control
Excess weight places an enormous additional load on the cardiovascular system, forcing arteries to work under constant strain.
Studies show that losing even one extra kilogram reduces blood pressure readings by about 1 mmHg. In addition, weight loss helps eliminate sleep apnea — dangerous breathing interruptions during the night that trigger blood pressure spikes.
Regular waist measurement
Abdominal fat that accumulates around internal organs is hormonally active and directly damages vascular elasticity.
Cardiologists warn that the risk of severe hypertension rises sharply when waist circumference exceeds critical levels. For men, the limit is 102 cm, and for women, 88 cm.
Daily physical activity
Moderate aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes a day can lower high blood pressure by 5–8 points. The key condition is consistency, as the effect quickly disappears without regular activity.
Brisk walking, swimming, light jogging, cycling, or dancing are ideal for improving vascular health.
Healthy diet transition
Special diets such as the DASH diet or Mediterranean eating pattern can reduce blood pressure by an impressive 11 mmHg.
Your daily plate should be rich in whole grains, fresh vegetables, and fruits. Special attention should be given to potassium (plant foods, greens), which naturally removes excess harmful sodium.
Strict salt and sodium restriction
Reducing salt intake to one teaspoon per day (about 1500–2300 mg sodium) can lower blood pressure by another 5–6 points. To achieve this, follow simple rules:
- Completely avoid processed foods, canned goods, chips, and sausages, which contain high hidden salt levels.
- Do not add extra salt at the table and switch to home-cooked meals.
- Replace salt with dried herbs, garlic, lemon juice, and spices.
Limiting or eliminating alcohol
Alcohol not only rapidly raises blood pressure immediately after consumption but also damages vascular tone with regular use. It can also block or significantly reduce the effectiveness of hypertension medications.
Complete smoking cessation
Every cigarette causes an immediate and prolonged artery spasm, forcing the heart to work under extreme strain.
Quitting smoking not only lowers blood pressure but also triggers rapid repair of blood vessel walls, significantly reducing stroke risk.
Proper sleep organization
Chronic sleep deprivation and less than 7 hours of rest per day are direct biological triggers for persistent hypertension.
Adults should sleep 7–9 hours per night in a cool, quiet, and completely dark room, turning off all devices at least one hour before bedtime.
Effective stress reduction
Long-term emotional stress forces the body to constantly release stress hormones that constrict blood vessels and increase heart rate.
Learn to plan your day without rushing, avoid taking on too many responsibilities, say “no” more often, and dedicate at least 10 minutes daily to calm rest or breathing exercises.
Regular monitoring of blood pressure, sugar, and cholesterol
Systematic home blood pressure measurement helps detect negative trends early and assess which lifestyle changes work best for you.
At the same time, monitoring glucose and bad cholesterol levels helps protect artery walls from plaque formation, loss of elasticity, and premature aging.
