US President Donald Trump has expressed his willingness to meet with Vladimir Putin next week. However, organizing the meeting within such a timeframe may prove difficult, according to CNN and NBC News.

One White House official told CNN that although Trump announced his intention to meet next week, there is one issue.

The outlet, citing the source, reported that organizing the meeting within such a short timeframe would likely be difficult due to the scope of negotiations required and various logistical obstacles.

An NBC source also stated that the meeting could still occur within the suggested timeframe, but emphasized that the dates remain subject to change.

A White House representative added that the location of the potential meeting has not been determined yet, with several options under consideration.

Background

On Wednesday, August 6, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff visited Russia, where he held meetings with Russian leadership, including President Putin. The key topic of discussion was the war in Ukraine.

Following the visit, media reported that during one of the meetings in Moscow, Putin told Witkoff he was willing to meet with Trump "at some point."

After Witkoff relayed this message, the US president stated he was open to meeting as early as next week if it could help bring an end to the war in Ukraine.

Media also reported that after a potential US-Russia leaders' summit, a trilateral meeting involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy might follow.
