The victory of Christian Democratic Union leader Friedrich Merz in the elections in Germany is important for Ukraine, states Ukrainian political analyst Ihor Reiterovych in a comment to the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel.

According to him, Merz's key task now is to form a coalition as quickly as possible. That is why his party has already begun initial negotiations.

"If they succeed, I believe Germany will be able to return to the club of European Union leaders, and that will definitely be good news for us. Because they are quite skeptical about the United States," Reiterovych stated.

In his opinion, this could enable Germany to provide more assistance to Ukraine and take on a leadership role in post-war settlement and support for Ukraine.

"For now, the prospects for us are not bad, but I fear that for at least a month — if we're lucky — the situation will remain somewhat uncertain due to the coalition formation. However, if they form it quickly, entirely new opportunities will open up for us, and I believe we must take full advantage of them," the political analyst emphasized.

Elections in Germany

Yesterday, early elections to the Bundestag took place in Germany. According to exit polls, Merz's party won the election: the CDU, along with its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), secured 29% of the vote.

The AfD party came in second, while the SPD took third place. This marks the worst result for the Social Democrats in federal elections to date.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz conceded defeat, took responsibility for the results, and congratulated Merz.

It is also worth noting that, according to Merz, he plans to form a government by April 20.
