Türkiye has several interests in Syria. In particular, Ankara aims to push Kurdish armed groups beyond Syria's borders, stated Tzvi Silber, the chief editor of Luchsheye Radio, in a comment to RBC-Ukraine's YouTube channel.

Rebel leader is not a puppet

He noted that the leader of the key Syrian rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, was "created by Türkiye," but he is not a puppet.

"This entire wave of public admiration and enthusiasm for him, due to his removal of Assad (President Bashar al-Assad - ed.), gives him significant political power. If he consolidates this by forming a government, a system of governance, or some semblance of democratic elections, it remains unclear what position he may aim to take," Silber added.

At the same time, he acknowledged that there are Turkish puppets among the rebels who have now gone to fight against the Kurds. Julani does not need this; he would end this war, but Türkiye continues it.

Türkiye's interests

According to Silber, Türkiye wants to expel the Kurds from Syria because this issue is tied to the security of the Turkish state.

The journalist also mentioned that Syria "lies in ruins," and Bashar al-Assad has done nothing to rebuild the country.

"Rebuilding Syria is in the interests of both Europe and Türkiye, because who will get the contracts for these construction projects? Of course, Türkiye. Europe will provide billions for reconstruction because it wants refugees to return to their homes. And Türkiye also wants refugees to return to their homes in Syria," he said.

Assad regime collapses

Syria has been engulfed in a civil war since 2011. Only this month the rebels managed to overthrow Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which had ruled for over 20 years.

Russia and Iran failed to support their ally. As a result, Assad fled to Moscow, and Syria’s capital, Damascus, came under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
