The Disney animated film Zootopia 2 has officially been recognized as the highest-grossing Hollywood release of 2025. The movie about the adventures of rabbit Judy and fox Nick earned an impressive $1.13 billion at the global box office in just 20 days, according to Variety.

What is known about Zootopia 2's success

The Zootopia sequel surpassed the previous year's top earner, the live-action version of Lilo and Stitch, which grossed only $1.03 billion, and simultaneously set a record for the fastest earnings among family audiences, reaching the $1 billion mark in just 17 days. This is also the best result for any Disney animated feature in the studio's history.

It should be noted that the majority of the box office earnings came from the international audience.

International earnings for Zootopia 2 have already reached approximately $878 million, with over $500 million coming from China.

Thus, the sequel became only the second animated feature in history to earn more than $1 billion exclusively from overseas markets, after Inside Out 2.

''The follow-up film has been particularly massive in China. Those ticket sales are notable because Chinese audiences haven't been receptive to Hollywood fare in years,'' reports Variety.

At the same time, globally, Zootopia 2 ranks seventh among the highest-grossing animated projects of all time. The film has surpassed the original 2016 movie and last year’s Raya and the Last Dragon sequel, and it still has the Christmas season ahead – traditionally strong for family box office, which could further boost Disney's numbers.

Zootopia 2 is not the highest-grossing worldwide – who holds first place?

Despite the studio's success, the absolute leader of the 2025 global box office remains the Chinese animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2 (Ne Zha: The Demon Child Conquers the Dragon King) with a record $2.2 billion.

However, among Hollywood releases, Zootopia 2 remains unmatched and confirms Disney's status as a leader in the family animation market.

At the same time, the studio has had less successful projects: the political drama Ella McKay flopped at the box office, earning only $2.4 million on a $35 million budget, highlighting the contrast between family hits and other studio ventures.

Still, Disney has a chance to end the year on a high note: the third installment of Avatar 3 (Avatar: Fire and Ash), set to premiere on December 19, could significantly reshape the annual box office landscape.
