Zelenskyy welcomes Pope Leo XIV's offer of Vatican as venue for Ukraine-Russia talks

Pope Leo XIV hosted a Ukrainian delegation following his enthronement. He expressed the Vatican's readiness to serve as a venue for direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in pursuit of a just peace, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
"After the inauguration Mass, we had a meeting with Pope Leo XIV. We are grateful to His Holiness for the audience," Zelenskyy said.
He noted that for millions around the world, the Pontiff is a symbol of hope for peace.

"The authority and voice of the Holy See can play an important role in bringing this war to an end. We thank the Vatican for its willingness to serve as a platform for direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia," Zelenskyy added.
He said Ukraine is ready for dialogue in any format that can deliver real results.
"We appreciate the support for Ukraine and the clear voice in defense of a just and lasting peace," the President concluded.
Pope's inauguration
As a reminder, Pope Leo XIV was officially enthroned today, May 18.
The ceremony took place at the Vatican and drew more than 250,000 attendees. Representatives from over 100 countries and international organizations were also present.
During the Mass, Pope Leo XIV mentioned Ukraine, emphasizing that the country is moving toward peace negotiations.
Notably, President Zelenskyy had previously planned a private meeting with the new Pope.
