Ukraine expects the deployment of forces and resources on its territory if the idea of peacekeepers is approved. A training program for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on Ukrainian soil could be the first step, says Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

"We are discussing with the French side the European, as you said, contingent on Ukrainian territory. So far, these are rather all-around discussions. We support the idea that the contingent of certain countries, our allies, our strategic partners, exists and could become part of security guarantees. Yet, it cannot be the sole security guarantee. It would not be enough," the president explained.

Deploying peacekeeping forces in Ukraine will be discussed with the British Prime Minister and has already been discussed with Baltic partners.

Zelenskyy adds that a Western military contingent can only be part of the security guarantees for Ukraine. Questions stay about what kind of contingent this would be, from which countries, what numbers, and where it could be deployed.

"Taking a step back, if I may, the contingent, first of all, could and should include instructors with a large-scale program of training our men, our troops, in Ukraine - on our territory. This is also being discussed as part of this future program, if it happens, regarding the deployment of forces and resources," he clarified.

Deployment of peacekeepers in Ukraine

France was the first to propose the idea of deploying military instructors in Ukraine. President Emmanuel Macron also supported the deployment of peacekeeping forces in Ukraine.

Currently, most NATO countries oppose sending troops to Ukraine. For example, Germany's Defense Minister suggested that Berlin could discuss the idea but only on the condition that Russia agrees.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy considers peacekeepers one of the best tools to force Russia into a stable peace.
