Zelenskyy and Duda discuss latest events in Russia, Ukrainian counteroffensive and ZNPP concerns
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a phone conversation with his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Duda, according to Zelenskyy's post on Twitter.
During the call, the leaders discussed the events in Russia, the situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, and preparations for the NATO Summit in Vilnius.
"We discussed the recent events in Russia and how they could impact the course of hostilities and the situation in the region. I informed Duda about the situation on the battlefield and the threatening situation created by the occupiers at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. We also coordinated our stances ahead of the NATO Summit in Vilnius and other international events," the Ukrainian president's statement read.
In his evening address, Zelenskyy also said that they discussed further strengthening of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The Vilnius Summit and Ukraine's NATO membership
The NATO Summit of member countries will take place in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, from July 11 to 12. According to Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine's expectations from the NATO Summit have already been partially met. A step will be taken that will bring Ukraine closer to joining the Alliance. The question remains how long this step will be, but it is already an achievement.
There is a chance that Ukraine can only join the Alliance after the conclusion of hostilities. However, the country aims to obtain a political decision regarding its accession at the NATO Summit in Vilnius. Ukraine also seeks security guarantees from NATO members that cannot serve as an alternative to membership. Sveral options for security guarantees for Ukraine are already being considered within the Alliance.
