Slight changes in your face can be the first signals your body gives about a magnesium deficiency. These signs often go unnoticed until the problem becomes more serious, according to Health
Muscle cramps
According to the journal Medical Sciences, magnesium is involved in many chemical reactions in the body, including those responsible for nerve and muscle function.
When magnesium is low, it can sometimes cause twitching or muscle cramps. This may affect muscles around the eyelids or small muscles near the mouth. Twitches may come and go.
This is more common in people under high stress or those who consume a lot of caffeine.
Facial numbness or tingling
Because magnesium plays a key role in nerve function, a significant deficiency can cause facial numbness. Some people feel a tingling sensation in the face. This may occur in people with conditions such as diabetes, which increase the risk of these sensations.
Dark circles under the eyes
Magnesium deficiency is not a direct cause of dark circles, but it can worsen the problem.
One main cause of dark circles is allergies. Exposure to allergens can lead to nasal congestion, sneezing, a runny nose, and itchy eyes.
These symptoms can also cause blood to pool in the veins under the eyes, making the area appear darker. Magnesium is also important for the immune system, and people with low magnesium often suffer more from allergies.
Additionally, low magnesium can impair sleep. Poor sleep contributes to the appearance of dark circles.
Jaw tension or clenching
Magnesium deficiency can lead to excessive muscle tension and cramps, including in facial muscles such as the jaw.
Low magnesium may cause:
- Increased neuromuscular excitability
- Muscle cramps or spasms
- Muscle tension, particularly in the jaw area
Skin problems
According to Jaad Reviews, magnesium plays several important roles in skin health, including:
- Supporting skin cell production and maintaining a strong skin barrier
- Acting as an antioxidant to protect skin from damage and reduce inflammation
- Helping produce collagen, which is key to skin elasticity
Without enough magnesium, the skin may not receive these benefits. Low magnesium can lead to excessive dryness of the skin and lips, as well as premature aging.
Magnesium deficiency can also worsen existing skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, or acne.
