Why snoring is dangerous and how to get rid of it
Snoring is the result of a disruption in the tone of throat muscles, often against the backdrop of impaired nasal breathing.
Pediatrician Daryna Vlasenko exlpains more on the causes of snoring and how to get rid of it.
Causes of snoring
- Alcohol before bedtime can cause snoring even in a healthy person.
- Excess weight intensifies snoring.
What you need to know about snoring
Snoring disrupts the inflow of air, leading to breathing pauses.
The heart also suffers from snoring, doing whatever it can to increase pressure in the system to provide the brain with the necessary oxygen.
The kidneys start shedding more fluid, leading to frequent trips to the bathroom at night.
Sleep is disrupted as the deep phase is absent, which is why you might wake up feeling exhausted.
Without rest, the brain is completely on edge and shuts down at the first opportunity.
Consequences of snoring
- Constant fatigue.
- Episodes of microsleep during the day, which can lead to very bad things.
- Increased blood pressure, initially only at night, and then during the day.
- Risk of early heart attack.
How to get rid of snoring
- Lose weight.
- Avoid alcohol at night.
- Visit an ENT specialist, restore nasal breathing if possible through medication (allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps).
- Undergo surgery to restore nasal breathing (septoplasty) or throat tissues.
- Visit an orthodontist and get a mouthguard that will keep the mouth closed.
- If none of the above helps, undergo polysomnography (monitoring vital signs during sleep) and use a CPAP machine.
