When we are nervous, our hands usually start to sweat. This phenomenon is a natural reaction of the body related to the nervous system and stress, states Marca. And while many people may consider it a disorder in everyday life, it is something we should normalize.

The role of the sympathetic nervous system

Our hands sweat due to the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, a part of the autonomic nervous system that controls involuntary reactions in the body.

When we feel anxious or stressed, the body perceives the situation as a possible threat and releases adrenaline, which causes rapid heartbeat, breathing, and sweating.

Function and causes of sweating

Sweating helps to regulate body temperature, but in situations of nervousness, it also has an evolutionary function: it improves hand grip in times of tension.

Although we don't need this mechanism to survive now, it is still present in our bodies. In some people, this reflex is more intense due to conditions such as palmar hyperhidrosis, a condition that causes excessive sweating without an obvious trigger.

Speaking of why hands sweat, it should be noted that this is a normal physiological process, as there are many corresponding glands in the palms of the hands.

However, in some people, sweating becomes excessive. If hyperhidrosis causes you to have difficulty holding small objects and parts, stains remain on paper, and people start avoiding handshakes, you should consult a doctor.
