Why India is not cutting ties with Russia: Indian analyst's explanation
India maintains ties with Russia amid the war in Ukraine. New Delhi hopes that this move will prevent a deepening of the China-Russia alliance, citing the RBC-Ukraine article "Why India's Modi arrives in Ukraine, and how his visit could influence course of the war."
"One reason for India's Russia-leaning neutrality is to prevent even closer China-Russia alliance. India hopes that by maintaining its good relations with Russia it will be able to ensure that the China-Russia alliance does not deepen," said Manoj Joshi, a senior fellow at the Indian think tank Observer Research Foundation, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
The analyst believes that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Kyiv aims to demonstrate India's balanced approach to Russia's war against Ukraine.
"India has called for peace through dialogue and negotiations and it sees this visit as part of promoting that process. The visit comes soon after the PM's visit to Russia which was criticized in many Western countries," explains Manoj Joshi.
The Indian expert added that through this visit, India is demonstrating "its concern over the terrible toll that Ukraine is paying for the war."
Modi's visit
Today, August 23, on the eve of Independence Day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kyiv for a visit. This is the first-ever visit by an Indian head of government to Ukraine, marking Modi's first trip to Kyiv since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In Kyiv, the Indian Prime Minister will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Before this trip, Modi visited Poland.
