Early parliamentary elections may be held in Serbia, as the government sees them as an opportunity to stabilize the domestic situation after large-scale protests, according to the Financial Times.

The demonstrations, which have swept Belgrade and other major cities, have become the largest in years. According to FT, the elections could be held ahead of the scheduled date of December 2027, though no official timeline has yet been set.

Serbian media report that the authorities plan to hold consultations with parliament and the electoral commission to agree on a possible schedule.

Political analysts suggest that Vucic’s proposal aims to maintain control and prevent further escalation of protest sentiment. Moving the vote forward could allow the ruling party to strengthen its position and reduce public discontent.

Tensions in Serbia have been growing since the spring, when regular demonstrations began demanding government resignation and reforms. Protesters accuse the authorities of restricting free speech, pressuring the media, and abusing administrative power.

Among the opposition’s key demands are fair elections, equal conditions for all political parties, and the establishment of independent monitoring commissions.

Officials, however, emphasize that they are open to dialogue and consider early elections a "democratic tool to restore public trust."

A final decision on the date is expected in the coming weeks following consultations with parliamentary faction leaders.

Recently, Vucic also expressed disappointment with Russia’s decision to limit a new gas contract to the end of this year, saying that Belgrade had hoped for a longer-term agreement to ensure stable fuel supplies.

Meanwhile, the European Parliament has adopted a resolution urging Serbia to clarify its foreign policy stance, either to support EU sanctions against Russia or risk losing its path toward EU membership.
