In today's world, there are many myths about food that are false and can even harm the body. Renowned dietitian and endocrinologist Kateryna Tolstikova, in a comment to RBC-Ukraine, has named the most common ones and explained why they should not be believed.

List of myths

According to the expert, the following statements are false:

  • Drinking a glass of water with honey or lemon in the morning is essential.
  • Food should never be washed down with water.
  • Taking additional vitamin D prevents cancer.
  • Avoiding meat leads to anemia and deficiencies in the body.
  • Eating eggs increases cholesterol levels.

What you need to know

Many believe that breakfast should never be skipped. However, modern life presents various situations.

"People today do not adhere to proper eating habits — not in terms of balance, but in terms of routine. Eating schedules are often disrupted, which can negatively affect the hormonal system and the gastrointestinal tract," the expert explained.

Thus, skipping breakfast can lead to certain health issues.

Additionally, there is a belief that dietary supplements should be taken before and after a feast to prevent a hangover. This is true, as they can have a certain impact on the body.

Furthermore, sweets can be replaced with dried fruits, honey, or nuts. However, substituting sweets with nuts is not an equal alternative because nuts are high in fats, and one might consume more calories than if they had eaten a piece of cake. Therefore, if such replacements are occasional, it is considered normal.
