The White House has announced a pause in the supply of Patriot missiles, guided aerial bombs, and artillery shells to Ukraine. These weapons are key to Ukraine's defense, especially in the area of escalating hostilities, according to The New York Times.

US officials have said that the ammunition will not be delivered to Ukraine for several months.

Reasons for the decision and the White House's reaction

Officially, the decision to suspend the aid was explained as a priority of US interests after analyzing the army's readiness. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly pointed to the need to protect national defense capabilities.

The administration notes that this approach strengthens the US's combat readiness in the face of potential threats. The Pentagon emphasized that the options for assisting Ukraine remain available.

Concerns in Congress and implications for Ukraine

Senator Jeanne Shaheen warned that a pause would significantly weaken Ukraine's air defense, increasing the risk of civilian casualties. Democrats especially emphasize that the suspension of aid came at the most dangerous time.

There were reasons for the depletion of US stockpiles even under the Biden administration: a lack of both modern and basic weapons. Congressional and analysts' forecasts portend difficulties in resuming supplies.

Delivery mechanisms and possible timing of aid repayment

The United States has been supplying Ukraine with weapons in two ways: from the Pentagon's stockpiles, with the possibility of rapid replenishment, and directly through procurement programs with manufacturers. The first stockpile is almost exhausted, and large contracts will continue to be fulfilled later.

The timing of the resumption of aid depends on presidential approval and the completion of the stockpile audit. The Pentagon has stated that it is monitoring developments and is ready to adapt its strategy if necessary.

Global risks and strategic priorities of the United States

Trump referred to the US global commitments and emphasized the importance of maintaining military power, meaning Ukraine is no longer the only priority in US military planning.

Europe's allies are experiencing similar problems, which may increase pressure on Washington and prompt an accelerated replenishment of ammunition.

Politico reported a pause in the supply of weapons to Ukraine. Among the weapons that are being suspended are 155-mm artillery shells, Stinger man-portable missiles, Patriot air defense batteries, and Hellfire missiles.

All US arms assistance to Ukraine was briefly suspended in February, followed by a second longer pause in March. The cessation of intelligence transfers to Ukraine allowed Moscow to retake part of the Kursk region.
