The United States was angry when Ukrainian troops sank the cruiser Moskva without warning, reports The New York Times. Washington was also surprised that Ukraine had missiles to do so.

The sinking of the Moskva was a signal triumph - a demonstration of Ukrainian skill and Russian mediocrity. But, as the journalists point out, this episode also reflected the incoherence between Ukraine and the United States in the first weeks of full-scale war.

The New York Times writes that two months after the outbreak of full-scale war, Ukrainian generals traveled to Wiesbaden, Germany, where they agreed with the US military to partner on intelligence, strategy, planning, and technology.

About two weeks earlier, US and Ukrainian naval officers were on a routine call when radar screens showed the sinking of the Russian cruiser Moskva.

This move caused anger among US officials, as the Ukrainian military had not warned them of the planned operation.

Also, the US was surprised that Ukraine had missiles to hit the cruiser. It also caused panic among Americans, as the then Joe Biden administration did not intend to allow Ukraine to attack such a powerful symbol of Russian power.

Destruction of the cruiser Moskva

In April 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine sank the Russian cruiser Moskva, which was the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. This is considered one of Ukraine's major victories since the beginning of the full-scale war.

The cruiser was attacked by Ukrainian-made Neptune missiles. The ship was initially hit, and a fire broke out. The Russians failed to save the Moskva, and the crew also went down.
