US President Donald Trump’s team and Vladimir Putin’s team are actively discussing involving an American investor in financing the Nord Stream gas pipelines, reports Reuters.
Journalists learned that high-ranking Russian and US representatives are involved in the talks, including Kirill Dmitriev and Jared Kushner.
Insiders claim that Trump’s son-in-law believes doing business with Moscow is an important part of restoring peace.
Moreover, the White House expects that such a deal would allow American investors to profit from supplying energy resources to Europe after the war ends.
“Any deals will have to be negotiated by Russia with DFC (US International Development Finance Corporation) and Treasury and must benefit United States taxpayers and companies,” one anonymous source said.
In September, Putin’s special envoy held a meeting with representatives of the US Department of Energy and Treasury Department. Potential energy initiatives between Russia and the US were the focus of the meeting.
“It remains unclear how interested Washington is in pursuing the restarting of Russian gas flows to Germany, which is Europe's biggest energy consumer,” the journalists emphasized.
One US official predicted that signing such a deal is currently unlikely due to the large number of obstacles.
A representative of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy issued a statement on the matter. She reminded the media that Nord Stream and Russian gas are under sanctions in Europe, and that Germany has found alternatives.
Insiders said that Trump’s and Putin’s teams also discussed the sale of assets belonging to Russian energy company Lukoil. US authorities expect to make significant profits if the plan is successfully implemented.
Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported what else the US and Russia are discussing during peace talks on ending the war.
It also became known why the Kremlin did not like Washington’s new idea for easing sanctions against Russia.
