An unusual phenomenon was observed in Kyiv last night - a thundersnow. Meteorologists assured the residents of Kyiv that there was nothing serious about it, according to meteorologist Natalia Didenko.
About thundersnow
"We are experiencing an atmospheric front. Cold air is pushing in, meaning the atmosphere is filled with cold northern air that collided with moist streams of the atmospheric front. The collision triggered a storm," explains the expert.
In essence, it's just like a thunderstorm but with snow instead of rain.
Didenko also added that the phenomenon is entirely normal and usually passes quickly.

The weather took a turn for the worse, and heavy snowfall began in the evening of January 11 in Kyiv. The wind also picked up, followed by the sounds of thunder.
Some eyewitnesses managed to capture this on video.
Folk omens
According to ancient beliefs, thunder in the winter could foretell a global disaster, and bad news would change the fate of many people.
Our ancestors believed that during such a snowstorm, one should wash the face with water from a silver ladle or bowl. They believed it would help gain strength in a difficult season.
