Ukraine's top-ranked tennis player, Elina Svitolina, emerged victorious against Bulgarian player Viktoria Tomova in the second round of the 2024 Australian Open, according to the match results.
Australian Open, 2nd round, women
Svitolina - Tomova - 2: 0 (6: 1, 6: 3)
The competitors started with an exchange of breaks, but Svitolina quickly took control of the initiative, preventing Tomova from winning another game and securing two more points on Tomova's serves to close the set in just half an hour.
The second set proved to be more competitive, with the opponents going toe-to-toe until the middle of the set. Even when Svitolina broke Tomova, the Bulgarian player responded immediately with a break of her own. However, in the seventh game, the Ukrainian took Tomova's serve for the second time and didn't allow her to reciprocate on her own serve.
Svitolina's match point was already looming brightly, but she could have opted not to force the issue and wait for her own serve. Nevertheless, the Ukrainian tennis player chose not to leave it to fate and secured a break in the next game, ending the match.
In the next round, Svitolina will face the winner of the match between Katerina Siniakova from Czechia and Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic. Their match started a bit later, and Svitolina's third-round match is scheduled for January 20.
On a side note, the day before, Ukrainian Kostyuk triumphed over Mertens in a thrilling 1/32 final match at the Australian Open.
