Ukrainian parliament may begin considering citizenship bill this week, sources say
This week, the Ukrainian parliament, Verkhovna Rada, may consider a draft law to ensure the right to acquire and retain Ukrainian citizenship, a source in the Servant of the People party told RBC-Ukraine. It was initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“It can indeed be considered this week and has been prioritized by the president. At the meeting, representatives of the Servant of the People faction will insist on its consideration this week,” the source said.
What kind of bill is it?
In early August, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy registered a draft law to ensure the exercise of the right to acquire and retain Ukrainian citizenship.
This document will define the permissible cases of multiple citizenship, as well as the peculiarities of acquiring and renewing Ukrainian citizenship for certain categories of foreigners.
The draft law will also clarify the conditions for acquiring Ukrainian citizenship:
- by birth;
- by territorial origin.
As well as the conditions for admission to Ukrainian citizenship.
In July 2023, the Cabinet of Ministers submitted to the Rada a bill that establishes additional conditions for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship. In March 2023, the Rada adopted a law on the conditions for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship.
