Ukrainian Armed Forces destroy Russian Su-24M bomber near Zmiinyi Island
Ukrainian forces destroyed a Russian Su-24M bomber near Zmiinyi (Snake) Island today, on December 5, according to Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, Mykola Oleshchuk, and a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, Dmytro Pletenchuk.
"It's been a while since we've had downed Russian Su in our achievements," the statement said.
Oleshchuk says the Russian Su-24M bomber was destroyed near Zmiinyi Island while attempting to launch a missile and bomb strike on the south of the Odesa region under the cover of the Su-30SM fighter.
"Thanks to the successful operation of the South Air Command, the Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile unit sent the Russian Su after the Russian military ship," added Oleshchuk.
It hindered the grain corridor
Pletenchuk says the aircraft laid mines to hinder the grain corridor.
Liberation of Zmiinyi Island
On June 30, 2022, Russian occupiers fled from Zmiinyi Island in the Black Sea, allowing Ukraine to prevent Russia from approaching the coast of the Odesa region and to open the grain corridor.
On the symbolic date of 500 days of war, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Zmiinyi Island. Together with Ukrainian commanders, he honored the memory of the heroes who liberated the island.
Russians struck the island occasionally. In July, they dropped an artillery shell.
