Ukrainian accused of 'espionage' died in Russian detention center
Ukrainian citizen Viktor Demchenko died in a Russian detention center. The Russian regime accused him of "espionage".
According to the Memorial Society, the Russian court's file contained information about the termination of the case in connection with the death of Demchenko, who was held by the Russians in a pre-trial detention center in Rostov region.
At the same time, Russian state propaganda media reported, citing "sources in law enforcement agencies," that Demchenko allegedly died of a stroke in the prison hospital on December 31.
Viktor Demchenko was born and lived in the town of Mospyne near Donetsk, which has been under Russian occupation since 2014. He was accused by the Russian regime of "espionage" and "participation in a terrorist community". However, there are no other details of the case in the public domain.
Even before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, dozens of Ukrainians, mostly residents of the occupied territories, were held in Russian captivity. After the full-scale invasion, the Russians continued the practice of terror and abductions of Ukrainian citizens.
As stated by the Secretary of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, Dmytro Usov, the Russian regime is initiating fake criminal cases against captured civilian Ukrainians.
