Tyson Fury promoter Frank Warren said the former heavyweight world champion could fight Russian Arslanbek Mahmudov, confirming the possibility of a British comeback, according to TalkSport.
Comeback strategy: why Mahmudov was chosen
After a difficult period in his career and an official announcement of his return, the Briton’s team is considering a fight with 193-cm Arslanbek Mahmudov.
According to Warren, Fury fully understands the current situation and is personally involved in selecting opponents. The promoter emphasized that the Gypsy King is highly intelligent and knows how to map a path back to his former heights.
“Of course, there’s a discussion over opponents and so forth, but he’s not stupid. He knows what he's got to do... we may do that,” Warren said.
State of the Gypsy King after loss to Usyk
2024 was a turning point for the Briton: he lost twice to Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk in fights for the undisputed world heavyweight title.
After the December rematch, Fury announced his retirement, but by early 2026 he had changed his mind for the fourth time and returned to training camp.
He is now actively preparing for his first ring appearance after a long hiatus.
Experts note that to regain confidence, Fury needs an opponent who allows him to showcase his technical skills without taking excessive risks.
Who is Arslanbek Mahmudov
Russian boxer Mahmudov (21-2, 19 KOs) is known for his size and aggressive fighting style.
In October 2025, he earned a decisive victory over Dave Allen, boosting his profile in the heavyweight division.
Previously, his name had been linked to a potential fight with Anthony Joshua, but Joshua’s team opted for other options.
Spencer Oliver told talkBOXING that Mahmudov is the perfect opponent for Fury right now.
Since the Briton has been out of action for a long time, he needs an opponent who will take the initiative and allow Tyson to work on counterattacks.
Other potential Fury opponents
Despite the likelihood of facing Mahmudov, Fury’s team still has other names on the shortlist, including:
-
Manuel Charr, with whom Tyson had previous arrangements;
-
Fabio Wardley, current WBO champion, who publicly expressed interest in testing himself against the legend;
-
Anthony Joshua, whose matchup with Fury remains one of the most anticipated in boxing.
The final decision on the date and opponent for Tyson Fury’s comeback is expected soon.
