US President Donald Trump asked Google CEO Sundar Pichai to rename the Atlantic Ocean on maps in his honor or in honor of America. The company refused, according to The Guardian.
How Trump chose ocean
"I only like two oceans: the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. I’m not going to put either Trump or America on any other ocean but these two. So we seriously looked at the Atlantic Ocean," Trump said.
According to him, he called Pichai and asked if the company could handle such a proposal.
Google's response
As Trump recounted, Pichai refused: "No, no, no. This time I’m not doing it … Oceans are different, sir. They cover … a lot of countries. Please don't ask us to do that."
"So I’ll probably pass. Should I pass it? I think let’s keep it the Atlantic Ocean," the US President concluded.
The Guardian reached out to Google for comment.
Trump first spoke about renaming the oceans back in late August, when he signed an executive order regarding Lake Ontario. "We have a gulf and we have a lake. Now, all we need is an ocean," he explained at the time, hinting at either the Atlantic or the Pacific.
The renaming of the lake, which separates the US and Canada, was taken painfully in Ottawa. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to Trump by reminding him of the historical context of the name.
Places named in Trump's honor are also popping up. In January, a section of South Boulevard in Florida, which runs from Palm Beach Airport to his Mar-a-Lago residence, was named after Trump.
