After local elections in several states, White House officials said Republicans are losing popularity due to insufficient focus on domestic issues in the US, according to Politico.
Trump’s team believes the president has devoted too little attention to the issues that concern voters the most.
A source close to the White House said that an excessive focus on foreign policy while people were struggling at home had produced exactly the results one would expect.
It is noted that Americans are concerned about rising prices, insufficient support for food assistance programs, and the potential end of subsidies for health insurance.
A political strategist close to the administration added that the president hadn’t addressed the cost of living in several months and that people were still struggling financially and wanted to see the White House taking action to solve these problems as quickly as possible.
Trump plans to focus on domestic policy
James Blair, Trump’s campaign political director and deputy chief of staff at the White House, stated that the president plans to shift focus back to economic well-being.
“I think you’ll see the president talk a lot about cost of living as we turn the year and into the new year. I think you’ll see him be very, very focused on prices and cost of living,” Blair said.
Vice President JD Vance emphasized on X that Republicans need to focus on domestic issues. According to him, despite some progress with lower interest rates and reduced inflation, the country inherited a disaster from Joe Biden, and efforts to improve citizens’ quality of life will continue.
Trump himself noted that part of the Republican losses was due to his absence from the ballots and the government shutdown.
Local elections in the US
In the mayoral elections in several cities and gubernatorial elections in two states on November 4, candidates from the Democratic Party won.
Left-wing populist Zohran Mamdani became mayor of New York City, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill was elected governor of New Jersey, and former Congresswoman and ex-CIA employee Abigail Spanberger won in Virginia.
The Republican candidate for New York City mayor was Curtis Sliwa, a US political and public figure, media personality, and founder of the Guardian Angels, an organization established in the late 1970s to patrol the streets of New York and fight crime. He also spent many years as a radio host on local stations.
Sliwa currently represents the Republican Party. He gained the most political recognition after running for mayor of New York City, losing to Democrat Eric Adams in 2021, and this time to Zohran Mamdani.
RBC-Ukraine reported that Trump criticized Mamdani’s victory, claiming that his win resulted in a loss of sovereignty.
