US President Donald Trump said that significant progress is currently being made in negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
Trump made the remarks while speaking with journalists at the White House.
"I think a lot of progress is being made there," US leader stated.
Donald Trump also commented on the so-called "energy truce" between Ukraine and Russia, saying he "appreciates" the fact that no Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have been observed so far, at least over the past several hours.
"I was told that Russia's not doing any shooting for a period of time during this horrendously cold weather because of you. So we we asked President Putin if they could stop the shooting for a week. They're being hit with uh proportionately the kind of cold that we're being hit. It's much colder in Ukraine to start off with, but it's really cold now and he agreed to do that. We appreciated that very much," the White House leader stressed, pointing to the low temperatures in Ukraine.
As for talks on ending the war in Ukraine, the next round is set to continue on February 1 in Abu Dhabi. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the negotiations are expected to involve only two parties, Ukraine and Russia.
Earlier, Donald Trump unexpectedly said he had reached an understanding with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin for Russia to temporarily halt strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure due to the cold weather, with temperatures expected to drop further.
Putin reportedly agreed to a so-called "energy truce," which would also require Ukraine to halt drone attacks on Russia. The truce officially began overnight on Jan. 29–30 and is expected to last one week.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later confirmed the "energy truce" with Russia.
