On Friday, US President Donald Trump will host the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan at the White House, seeking to act as a mediator in reaching a peace agreement, according to The Washington Post.

The meeting was confirmed by two senior White House officials. One of them said that a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia might be announced during the meeting.

Trump is expected to meet directly on August 8 with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

What preceded this

Last month, the leaders of the two countries met in the UAE to hold peace talks. However, no resolution was announced, despite officials earlier this year stating that a preliminary agreement was being prepared.

Earlier, in June, Pashinyan said that Armenia expects to sign a peace agreement with Azerbaijan by the end of this year. He emphasized that this is one of Yerevan’s goals.

The two former Soviet countries have conflict for several decades, ever since Nagorno-Karabakh separated from Azerbaijan and came under Armenian control.

The Washington Post noted that before Azerbaijani forces regained control over Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023, the region was predominantly Armenian, which led to the flight of many ethnic Armenians.
