President of the United States Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump announced that the Israeli official might visit Washington as early as next week, NBC News reports.

"I spoke to him today," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One in response to their questions.

According to the US President, Netanyahu may visit Washington "in the not too distant future, maybe next week." Trump also mentioned what the leaders plan to discuss.

"We'll speak about Israel, and we'll speak about what's going on. That's another thing we'd like to get solved," the US President stated.

Breakdown of Gaza ceasefire

On January 19, ahead of Trump's inauguration, a ceasefire was reached between Israel and Hamas. However, in mid-March, it was broken, as militants refused to hand over hostages to the Israeli side.

Soon after, at the end of March, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) launched a ground operation in Rafah to expand the security zone.

According to the latest media reports, the Palestinian group Hamas is ready to release all remaining hostages in exchange for a permanent ceasefire.
