How too much salt harms health
The recommended daily intake for adults is up to 5 g of salt (about 1 level teaspoon).
Excess sodium intake is strongly linked to high blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.
The body may signal excess salt through swelling, fluid retention, bloating, and increased thirst. Even in people without chronic hypertension, a single high-sodium meal can temporarily raise blood pressure within 30–60 minutes.
Over-salting already salty foods, such as canned products, may even alter taste perception. High sodium intake can change sensitivity to salt and create a cycle of craving more salt over time.
How to consume salt safely
People often add salt without knowing how much they actually use, so it is important to measure it.
A large pinch can add up to 600 mg of sodium to a dish. The issue is that sodium accumulates from multiple sources, many of which are not perceived as salty.
It is important to check food labels. If a product contains less than 5% of the recommended daily intake, it is considered low in sodium. If it contains 20% or more, it is high in sodium.
Other ways to add flavor
Instead of relying only on salt, consider other seasonings and herbs.
Vinegar and citrus fruits can enhance flavor without adding sodium. Plain yogurt with spices and citrus can also be a great marinade for fish and meat.
Garlic, onion, ginger, black pepper, paprika, cumin, coriander, and dried herbs (basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme) can completely change the taste of a dish. Lightly heating spices in a pan or oil makes them more aromatic.
Cooking methods also matter. For example, baking or frying until golden creates caramelization, adding a rich, slightly sweet flavor.
Texture is also important. Crunchy elements like nuts or seeds can make a dish taste better and more satisfying.
