Buying fresh produce with the best intentions often ends in disappointment: vegetables wilt, greens spoil, and leftovers end up in the trash. In other words, you are throwing money away.

Mirror explains how to store food, so you don’t have to throw it away.

The secret to the system: a filing cabinet freezer

Most people blame their own disorganization or lack of time.

However, food storage expert Kate Hall, who regularly appears on the BBC, says the problem is not you but the way you use your freezer.

Kate has developed her own system that does not require perfect meal planning or exhausting batch cooking for the week ahead. Her main rule is to use the freezer not simply as storage, but as a convenient “filing cabinet” where everything is visible.

Instead of piling up plastic containers that take up a lot of space and hide their contents, the expert takes a different approach.

The main principles of Kate’s method:

  • Clear drawer organization. Each freezer drawer has its own category and label: baked goods, dairy products, cooked leftovers, fruit, vegetables, fish, and raw meat.
  • Bags instead of containers. Foods such as spring onions, garlic, parsley, chopped carrots, or tomatoes are stored in flat, airtight zip-top bags. This saves a huge amount of space.
  • Mandatory labeling. Each bag is marked with the freezing date and the name of the food.
  • Vertical storage. The bags are placed vertically in the drawers, like folders in a filing cabinet. This lets you find the ingredient you need in seconds without rummaging through the entire freezer.

Social media reaction

The method quickly went viral on TikTok. Users widely admit that this approach is a game changer in the kitchen.

One commenter aptly called the system a filing cabinet for food, while others said this level of organization is their dream freezer.

Even those who are used to cooking in large batches noted that sorting ingredients into flat bags makes cooking much less stressful and, most importantly, helps eliminate food waste while saving the family budget.
