The beauty and attractiveness of a person are not about appearance, but something else entirely. In today's world, where the first impression is often based on appearance, the latest research shows that it is kindness and prosocial behavior that can make a person truly attractive, reports British Journal of Social Psychology.

A recent study published in the British Journal of Social Psychology proves that kindness can be the main trump card in the attractiveness rating.

A team of scientists analyzed 10 experiments with more than 4000 participants, creating different scenarios to assess the impact of prosocial behavior on physical attractiveness.

Participants in the studies

  • observed real examples of useful behavior
  • read descriptions of prosocial actions
  • Imagine scenarios with good actions

Participants also looked at images of people, reading descriptions of both neutral and helpful behaviors, and then rated their physical attractiveness.

Sometimes there were no accompanying images, allowing the researchers to test whether the effect went beyond visual impressions.

The results showed a consistent relationship: people who demonstrated kindness and willingness to help were judged to be more beautiful regardless of their physical disabilities.

Ongoing benevolence had a much stronger effect than random or one-off acts. It turned out that even when participants noticed physical flaws, such as scars or asymmetry, a positive attitude significantly blurred these moments.Ці дві риси особистості роблять людину миттєво привабливішою: перевірте, чи є вони у вас

"We thought prosociality would play a significant role, but we didn't expect it to outperform intelligence or humor. This discovery suggests that kindness may be more central to our perception of beauty than we usually assume," said Natalia Kononova, a Fulbright graduate student at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Scientists emphasize that the results of the study show that true beauty is formed not only by external data but also by the ability to give warmth and support to others.

In a world where everyone strives to be noticed, the study reminds us that it is worth investing not only in appearance but also in the development of personal qualities.

Prosocial behavior, as the key to true attractiveness, can change our perception of both ourselves and others.
