'The time has come' - Zelenskyy urges for creation of armed forces of Europe

Amid the Russian threat, Europe needs its own armed forces. The time to create them has come, states Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his speech at the Munich Security Conference.
"I believe in Europe. And I am sure you believe too. I urge you to act for your own sake. And for the sake of Europe, people of Europe, your nations, your houses, your children and our shared future," said Zelenskyy.
He emphasized that Europe must become self-sufficient and unite its strength with Ukraine.
The president reminded that Ukrainian defenders, supported by other countries, are currently holding back Russia. However, it is no longer possible to rule out the possibility that the US could say "no" to Europe on matters that threaten it.
"Many leaders have talked about Europe which needs its own military and army. Army of Europe. I believe that time has come. The armed forces of Europe must be created," he added.
The president also addressed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, stating that such armed forces would not replace the Alliance.
"This is about making Europe's contribution to our partnership equal to America's. And we need the same approach when it comes to diplomacy - working together for peace," he clarified.
Zelenskyy's warning to Europe
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had stressed that European countries do not have enough military strength to deter Russia.
He pointed out that Russia has 220 combat brigades, while Europe has only 80. Therefore, in the event of an attack, Russia could fully occupy Europe if Ukraine does not assist.
