Türkiye asks the US to ease sanctions on Russian Gazprombank. Ankara is seeking an exemption from the sanctions list, according to Hürriyet.

During negotiations between the American delegation, led by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and the Turkish side in Ankara, Turkey raised the issue of easing sanctions on Gazprombank.

Turkey aims to be removed from the sanctions list and has submitted an application.

According to the publication, the American side acknowledged the submitted applications and is currently reviewing the matter.

Earlier, the Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources stated that the US decision to impose sanctions on Gazprombank would affect Turkey, as Ankara continues to purchase gas from Moscow.

Sanctions against Gazprombank

Recall that in November 2024, the US introduced sanctions against the Russian Gazprombank due to Moscow’s war against Ukraine. This impacted Russia’s gas market, as the bank remains the only authorized entity for processing payments.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin abandoned the requirement that foreign buyers use only Gazprombank when purchasing Russian gas.

Hungary is also seeking a relaxation of US sanctions, as Russia is the main gas supplier to the country. According to Bloomberg, the EU is also urging the US to ease sanctions on Gazprombank.
