Sweden will deploy Patriot missile defense systems in eastern Poland to help protect a NATO logistics hub through which the allies supply weapons to Ukraine, reports Reuters.
According to the report, the operation will begin in December. It will involve about 100 military personnel from a Swedish air defense unit based in Halmstad.
“The task of both the Gripen deployment and the Patriot deployment is...to protect NATO's logistics hub in Poland at the airport,” said Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
He did not specify how many Patriot systems would be sent to Poland.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte previously called on allies to prepare for a new wave of hybrid attacks from Russia. These include systematic arson and sabotage at EU defense and critical infrastructure sites.
Danish intelligence has also warned of a likely intensification of Russia’s hybrid attacks against NATO countries in the coming months. The possibility of a limited military operation cannot be ruled out either.
