Ukrainian athlete Elina Svitolina has been named the "Comeback of the Year" by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), according to an announcement on the official WTA website.

The accomplished Ukrainian received the award for her outstanding performance in 2023, surpassing Czech tennis players Vondrousova and Muchova, as well as Hsieh Su-wei from Taiwan and neutral Russian Pavlyuchenkova.

Svitolina made a remarkable return to the court after giving birth to her daughter in the spring. Throughout the year, she climbed over 1000 places in the professional rankings, won the tournament in Strasbourg, and reached the semifinals of Wimbledon, defeating the world's number one, Swiatek. In the fall, the Ukrainian took a break due to foot problems but will finish the season in the top 25 of the WTA rankings.

Svitolina is set to kick off the new season with a tournament in Auckland in early January, part of the traditional preparation for the Australian Open in New Zealand. There, the Ukrainian tennis player will begin her campaign in the main draw of the major.

Other winners in the 2023 Women's Tennis Association awards include:

  • Player of the Year: Iga Swiatek
  • Most Improved Player: Zhang Shuai
  • Newcomer of the Year: Mira Andrejeva
  • Doubles Team of the Year: Storm Hunter/Elise Mertens
  • Coach of the Year: Tomasz Wiktorowski

On a side note, American Gauff sensationally topped the list of the highest-paid female athletes on the planet.
