A well-planned wardrobe doesn’t start with hunting for the perfect jeans or skirt; it begins with the right approach to combining pieces. Ukrainian stylist Olena Shevchenko shared on her Instagram post a universal rule that works for every body type, regardless of size, age, or lifestyle.

How to build a wardrobe for any body type

According to Shevchenko, each bottom piece in your wardrobe should have at least three different tops to pair with it.

This isn’t just about basics; it’s about carefully chosen pieces that can create different moods and styles. The rule works equally well for plus-size, non-standard, or classic body types.

The stylist explains that people perceive the body primarily from the waist up. The top of an outfit defines body proportions, creates balance, and shapes the first impression of your overall silhouette.

A blouse, jacket, shirt, or sweater can completely transform the way the figure is presented, even when paired with the same bottom piece.

Shevchenko points out that changing the top can transform the whole outfit, making it look more restrained, lighter, more polished, or, conversely, relaxed.

Replacing pants or a skirt without changing the top often has little impact on the overall visual effect. That’s why focusing on a variety of tops is key to a functional wardrobe.

Olena Shevchenko emphasizes that proportion balance always starts at the top, not the bottom. This basic style rule helps create harmonious outfits without constantly struggling with your body or trying to fix it through clothing.

The expert stresses that fashion should work for the person, not the other way around. Choosing the right tops allows you to look confident and stylish in everyday life without wasting money or energy on endless wardrobe experiments.
