Even the most fashionable winter outfits can ruin your figure. Ukrainian stylist explained which mistakes in combining silhouettes and volumes make a look heavy, and how to avoid them to maintain a harmonious appearance.
Contrasting horizontal lines
One of the main mistakes is using too many contrasting horizontal lines in a single outfit. A typical example is dark low ankle boots paired with light tights and a dark midi skirt. This combination visually cuts the silhouette into sections, making the figure appear bulkier.
The stylist recommends working with monochrome tones and creating a continuous vertical line: choose dark tights or tall boots that extend under the skirt hem.
For lighter dresses and skirts, printed boots can reduce contrast and create a more cohesive look.
Outerwear length
Another common problem is mismatched lengths. A coat ending at the widest part of the hips, or a midi skirt peeking out too much under a coat or puffer jacket, disrupts body proportions.
The stylist advises choosing either long outerwear that covers the skirt length or shorter models that end above or below the critical hip line.
When selecting outerwear, it’s important to consider what it will be worn with. The most versatile options are cropped coat-jackets or maxi-length coats.
Balancing volumes in winter outfits
A third typical mistake is an imbalance in volumes. For example, pairing an overly bulky puffer with wide-leg palazzo pants creates extra mass and makes the outfit look heavy.
In these cases, the expert recommends either choosing a moderately sized puffer, a coat with a drawstring at the waist, or pairing a voluminous top with straight-cut pants. Footwear also plays a key role—a neat pair helps balance proportions.
While oversized silhouettes remain in fashion, many women now prefer more feminine shapes. Straight or slightly tapered jeans and pants form the base of a winter wardrobe.
If you choose wide-leg pants, it’s best to pair them with puffers that have drawstrings or a clearly defined waist.
The expert emphasizes that the key to a successful winter look is thoughtful proportions, working with vertical lines, and balancing volumes. These details allow for a stylish and modern appearance even in the coldest season.
