For healthy hair, it’s important to follow a complete care routine rather than relying on a single product.

Many people believe that hair oil can deeply nourish and repair strands.

But is this product really necessary for healthy hair? Hairdresser Ruslana Bela explained on Instagram.

Hair product you don’t really need

Bela says that in most cases, hair oil works differently than expected. The oil doesn’t penetrate the hair shaft or repair its structure; it only creates an external effect of smoothness and shine.

According to the expert, the molecules in natural oils are too large to enter the hair, and they don’t form chemical bonds with it, so they have weak adherence to the surface.

Another key point is the lack of a “conditioning charge,” which helps professional products stick to damaged areas and fill them. Hair oil does not do this.

Why the effect is short-lived

Bela emphasizes that oil doesn’t treat hair—it merely locks in its current condition.

  • If hair is dry, oil just preserves the dryness.

  • If hair is well-moisturized, it helps retain moisture.

That’s why the effect is often only cosmetic, lasting until the next wash, rather than providing long-term repair.

Natural oils also have drawbacks

Another limitation is instability: natural oils can oxidize over time and develop an unpleasant smell, reducing their effectiveness in hair care.

How to use hair oil correctly

Despite these points, you don’t need to give up hair oil entirely. The expert recommends using it as a final step in your routine for shine, smoothness, and moisture protection.

The best results come when oil is combined with other products like masks, conditioners, and treatments that actually work on the hair’s internal structure.
