The UK should not choose between Europe and the US, as this could be a major mistake for the country as a whole.

This was stated by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as reported by The New York Times.

"Many people are urging us to choose between the U.S. and Europe. Churchill didn’t do it. Attlee didn’t do it. It’d be a big mistake, in my view, to choose now," he said.

At the same time, the UK Prime Minister agreed with US President Donald Trump regarding Europe's defense.

"I do think that President Trump has a point when he says there needs to be a greater burden borne by European countries for the collective self-defense of Europe," Starmer added.

Brexit

The Brexit referendum, or the UK’s vote to leave the European Union, took place on June 23, 2016. Nearly 52% of Britons supported the decision. Brexit immediately impacted the UK economically, with the pound falling to a 30-year low.

On March 29, 2017, the UK government initiated the process of leaving the EU. The Queen of the UK officially approved Brexit in January 2020. Later that year, the UK and the EU signed the Brexit agreement.
