The biathlon world shocked by tragic news from Italy. At the age of 27, Norwegian national team member Sivert Guttorm Bakken was found dead in his hotel room, according to NRK.

Circumstances of the tragedy and initial details

The athlete’s body was found in his hotel room on Tuesday, December 23. At the time, he was wearing a training mask used for workouts under limited oxygen conditions.

The Norwegian Biathlon Association has already responded to the news.

“The Norwegian Biathlon Association currently does not know the circumstances of the acquisition and use of this mask,” the statement said.

The official cause of death will be determined after an autopsy, which will be conducted in Italy.

Bakken's sports career

Bakken began his career in 2008 and became one of the most promising biathletes of his generation. He had four World Cup stage victories and three European Championship gold medals.

Despite serious health issues, including long-term treatment after COVID-19 and myocarditis, Sivert managed to return to top-level sport after a prolonged break.

In the current season, he ranked 13th overall and was preparing for upcoming competitions in Oberhof. His last official race was the mass start in Annecy, where he finished 20th.

Reaction from the biathlon community

The news of the Norwegian’s death sparked condolences from colleagues and fans.

Tarjei Bø, who trained alongside Bakken for many years, highlighted his dedication, noting that Sivert always remained true to himself.

''It is hard to believe this is true. When young people pass away, it feels so unfair and sad. Sivert was one of a kind. He always stayed true to himself and what he loved. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone so dedicated, '' said the legendary biathlete Tarjei Bø.

''Sivert was a wonderful person. He was always so positive. He suffered greatly from COVID and myocarditis. He showed incredible patience and, after a break, finally returned. He held on to hope and came back, and now he is gone. It’s so painful, '' said Norwegian biathlete Tiril Eckhoff.

The Ukrainian national team also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and the Norwegian team.
