SPF before or after makeup? Doctor explains proper sequence
When to apply SPF cream to the face (photo: magnific)
Many people apply SPF incorrectly, which can make sun protection almost ineffective. A doctor explained at which stage it should be used: before or after makeup.
Before or after makeup
The primary sun protection starts with clean and moisturized skin — SPF 30+ should be applied directly to it before any makeup.
The amount should be sufficient (about 1/2 teaspoon for the face, or the length of the index and middle fingers). After applying, wait 10–15 minutes for full absorption, and only then proceed with primer and foundation.
Morning skincare routine steps
- Cleansing and skin preparation: wash your face with gel or foam, apply toner or essence to balance pH
- Moisturizing: use a light cream if your sunscreen is not moisturizing enough
- Applying SPF: spread evenly over the face, including ears and neck. Chemical filters need 10–15 minutes to activate; mineral filters work almost immediately
- Makeup: after SPF absorbs, apply primer and foundation (tonal or BB/CC cream). Ideally, these products should also contain SPF
- Powder or spray: optional finishing layer for extra protection and matte effect
Reapplying SPF during the day
Frequency: reapply every 2 hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.
How to reapply:
- Without makeup: apply regular SPF cream or fluid
- With makeup: use SPF powders or sprays that do not disrupt makeup
- In very sunny conditions, the most reliable method is to remove makeup and reapply a fresh SPF layer
SPF myths
SPF in makeup replaces sunscreen
The doctor explained that foundation products usually contain only a low SPF, and the product is applied in a very thin layer, so the actual protection often equals only SPF 5–10.
To truly achieve the claimed protection, SPF cream should be applied separately.
Two SPF products give a higher total SPF
This is not true, as protection equals the highest of the SPF levels. For example, SPF30 cream + SPF30 foundation does not give SPF60. It is more important to cover the entire skin surface than to increase the SPF number.
Sunscreen needs to be reapplied only at the beach
Even in the city, the sun can deactivate filters. Sweating, friction from clothing, and pollution reduce effectiveness over time.
Therefore, it is recommended to renew protection every 2 hours in open sun.
SPF is not needed in winter or cloudy weather
UVA rays are active year-round and pass through clouds and glass. In winter, light reflects off snow, increasing exposure. Therefore, SPF cream is needed even in cold weather and indoors near a window.
A foundation with SPF provides protection
If a foundation contains SPF, it is only an additional layer of protection. The main protection is provided by the cream or fluid applied first.
