President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić hinted at a possible resignation during a visit to China, reports Vreme.
Speaking to journalists in Beijing, Vučić said that his presidential mandate is coming to an end and suggested he might step down early.
"Maybe I will resign soon," he said.
At the same time, he emphasised that he would not take the step that former president Boris Tadić once took — Tadić resigned in 2012, ten months before the end of his term, so that combined presidential and parliamentary elections would strengthen his party's position.
On the protests
Vučić dismissed the significance of Saturday's protests at Slavija Square, calling them empty and lacking clear content. He contested the reported number of participants — three security agencies estimated between 30,500 and 34,300 people; the authorities accepted the highest estimate.
Vučić also accused the organisers of being responsible for incidents after the rally ended.
Vučić's Serbian Progressive Party has announced its own gathering from June 26 to 28.
The protests in Serbia began after the roof of a railway station collapsed in 2024, killing 16 people. Student actions quickly grew into a mass anti-government movement — the opposition and activists accuse the authorities of corruption and incompetence.
In August 2025, the protests escalated into clashes with police; six law enforcement officers were injured, and 38 people were detained.
