German Chancellor Olaf Scholz believes that discussions about the deployment of peacekeepers in Ukraine are inappropriate now. In his opinion, a ceasefire and negotiations should take place first, according to his interview with RND.

“I consider such debates inappropriate and premature. It means that we assume that Ukraine will not get back part of its territory from Russia,” he said.

Scholz emphasized that the issue of peace should not be resolved “over the heads” of Ukrainians. First, there should be a ceasefire and genuine negotiations, not a dictated peace.

“Only then will it be possible to see what the guarantees of Ukraine's security can be in the future. In any case, Ukraine will have an army that it will not be able to maintain at the expense of its own financial resources alone, and we and all friends of Ukraine will be needed here,” the German Chancellor said.

Peacekeepers for Ukraine

Discussions about the possible deployment of peacekeepers to Ukraine after the ceasefire have been going on for several months. France was one of the first to talk about this initiative.

Ukraine has already discussed this idea with France, Poland, and the Baltic states. Discussions with the UK are ongoing.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke about a figure of 200,000 European peacekeepers to deter Russia in the future. He made this statement at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

However, later the head of state explained that there is no exact number of peacekeepers to deter Russia. It all depends on the size of the Ukrainian army.
