Scholz confident in unified Ukraine plan after talks with Trump
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has spoken with US President-elect Donald Trump about the war in Ukraine. Scholz expressed confidence that both leaders could develop a unified strategy regarding Ukraine, according to Reuters.
"I am confident that we can develop a joint strategy for Ukraine. My guiding principle remains that nothing can be decided without giving the Ukrainian people a say," Scholz said in an interview with the Funke media group.
The German chancellor described the conversation with Trump as detailed and emphasized that his team is in direct communication with Trump’s security advisors. Scholz also stressed the urgency of ending the violence as quickly as possible while ensuring Ukraine's sovereignty and independence.
Background
On December 2, Scholz visited Ukraine and met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.
Additionally, Friedrich Merz, a candidate for German chancellor, announced plans to visit Ukraine in the coming days.
This comes after Germany’s ruling coalition collapsed last month following Scholz’s dismissal of Finance Minister Christian Lindner. Snap elections are scheduled for February 23, 2025.
